Smaply Research Hub: themed customer insights grounding portfolio items
How it works

A synthesis loop, not a research folder.

Five steps that turn raw feedback into a portfolio item your team can act on, and update as new evidence lands.

1
Upload
Interviews, surveys, tickets, transcripts. Drop it in, raw.
2
Synthesize
AI clusters verbatims; you decide what becomes a theme.
3
Enrich
Tag with persona, journey, sentiment, severity.
4
Connect
Promote themes to portfolio items grounded in evidence.
5
Revisit
New data flows in. Old insights stay live, not buried.
Capture

One place for every kind of customer evidence.

Drop in raw audio, transcripts, survey verbatims, and support tickets. Smaply transcribes, deduplicates, and tags by source, so nothing gets lost between tools.

  • Native integrations with Qualtrics, Zendesk, and Mixpanel
  • Drag-and-drop import from Zoom, Otter, and Notion
  • Automatic source attribution on every quote

Synthesize

AI suggests the themes. Your team decides what stays.

Smaply clusters verbatims into candidate themes with sentiment, severity, and source counts. Every output is a draft: your team approves, edits, or splits before anything enters the system.

  • Sentiment and severity scoring at the verbatim level
  • Suggested themes with full traceability to source quotes
  • Edit, merge, split, or reject. Nothing is auto-published

Connect

Themes become portfolio items, grounded in evidence.

Promote a theme to a portfolio item and it carries every verbatim, every persona tag, and every journey link with it. When stakeholders ask "why?", the evidence is already attached.

  • One theme can ground multiple portfolio items
  • Promote, link, or split. The source trail never breaks
  • Stakeholders can drill from portfolio back to the original quote

AI built in, not bolted on

AI accelerates the work. Your team decides what counts.

Every AI suggestion is reviewable before it enters the system. Speed where it helps, judgment where it matters.

AI ACCELERATES

The slow, mechanical work.

Transcribes 32 interviews overnight
Clusters 1,400 verbatims into theme candidates
Scores sentiment and severity on every quote
Suggests merges with existing themes
Drafts an executive summary

YOUR TEAM DECIDES

The judgment calls that matter.

Which themes earn a name in the system
How to split or merge a candidate cluster
Which verbatims are signal vs noise
What gets promoted to a portfolio item

What's in Research Hub

Eight ways research becomes a system, not a stockpile.

● Sources

Pull in every kind of customer evidence

Interviews, surveys, support tickets, app feedback. Smaply transcribes, deduplicates, and attributes, automatically.

● AI

Cluster themes in minutes

Suggested themes with full traceability. Approve, edit, or split.

● Sentiment

Quote-level sentiment

Score every verbatim individually.

● Traceability

Every claim, sourced

Drill from a portfolio item back to the original quote.

● Merge

New data, same theme

Q4 verbatims merge into the Q1 theme. The count grows.

● Outputs

Hand off polished briefs without rebuilding the deck

One-click export to branded PDF, Notion, or directly into a journey card. Format follows the audience.

● Connections

Themes become portfolio items, grounded in evidence

One theme can ground multiple portfolio items. Stakeholders drill from decision back to source in two clicks.

● Compounding

Research that gets stronger every quarter

No more starting from scratch. Old insights stay live. New evidence flows in. The base grows.

The merge capability

New evidence strengthens old insights, instead of starting over.

Every quarter, new research lands. In most tools that means a new folder, a new tag, and a new round of forgetting. In Smaply, fresh verbatims merge into existing themes: the count grows, the connections stay, the work compounds.

  • Merge new verbatims into an existing theme in one click
  • Watch portfolio items get stronger as evidence accumulates
  • See trend lines across quarters: has this problem grown?

How teams use it

Three moments where compounding research pays off.

A pile of interview transcripts on Monday morning.

Drop 32 transcripts in, let Smaply transcribe and cluster overnight, then spend Monday afternoon reviewing themes, not building spreadsheets.

The QBR asks why a feature still has the same complaints.

Open the theme. It has six quarters of verbatims attached. The portfolio items it grounds are still in discovery. The reason is on the screen.

A new researcher joins mid-year.

They open Research Hub and see the live themes, every verbatim, every portfolio link. Their first week is contributing, not catching up.

FAQ

Questions researchers and procurement teams ask.

How is Research Hub different from a research repository like Dovetail?+
Repositories store research. Research Hub connects it. Themes in Smaply ground portfolio items, which sit on journeys, which roll up to metrics. The repository is the start of the system, not the system itself.
What does "human-in-the-loop" mean in practice?+
Every AI output is a draft. Smaply suggests themes, clusters, sentiment scores, and summaries, but none of them enter the system without a researcher reviewing, editing, or rejecting them. Approval is one click; the audit log records who decided.
Where does the AI run? Is my data used to train models?+
AI processing runs on EU infrastructure on Governance plans, with full data residency. Customer data is never used to train shared models. DPA, sub-processor list, and model evaluation reports are in the Trust Center.
Can we import existing research from other tools?+
Yes. Native integrations with Qualtrics, Zendesk, Mixpanel, Notion, and Zoom. Drag-and-drop import for transcripts, CSVs, and structured exports from Dovetail, Aurelius, and EnjoyHQ.
How does the merge capability work technically?+
When new verbatims arrive, Smaply scores their semantic similarity against existing themes. Above a threshold (configurable per workspace), the verbatim is suggested as a merge into the existing theme. Below it, a new theme is suggested. Either way, a researcher confirms.
Is Research Hub available on the free plan?+
Research Hub is available on paid plans. The free plan includes Journey Maps with up to 3 maps. See pricing for full details.

Research Hub doesn't end at the synthesis. Insights flow into the portfolio, ground the journey, and feed back into the AI as new data lands.
